About

Working, a single-channel video by Los Angeles–based artist Pau S. Pescador. Working considers federal service as a place where laws are created and enforced, societal attitudes take shape, and the boundaries of American belonging are negotiated. From segregation in the federal civil service to the McCarthy era, the Lavender Scare, and the enforcement of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” exclusion from government employment has helped define whose identities and contributions are recognized as fully American.
Against this history, Pescador centers the voices of transgender federal workers. At a time of rapid change in the rights of trans employees and heightened scrutiny of federal workers more broadly, Working brings individual experiences into a larger conversation about public service, identity, and belonging.
