Call for Curators: 2022 Wisconsin Triennial

It’s the first time that MMoCA is seeking an outside curator for the Triennial, a signature survey of Wisconsin contemporary art.

Call for Curators: 2022 Wisconsin Triennial Media Release

MADISON, WI — The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA) is pleased to announce the opening of a call for guest curators for its 2022 Wisconsin Triennial. A signature survey of contemporary art statewide, MMoCA’s Wisconsin Triennial will—for the first time in its 43-year history—be curated by someone working outside of the institution. The Wisconsin Triennial takes the pulse of the current artistic moment in the region, both highlighting the latest developments in artistic practice and honoring timeless themes that remain relevant to artists working today.

Aligned with MMoCA’s mission to bring inspiring events to our community, the Museum is looking for curators with an innovative and inclusive vision to bring a transformative approach to a cornerstone of MMoCA’s exhibition programming. The upcoming Wisconsin Triennial will be on view at MMoCA from April through October of 2022 in the Museum’s State Street Gallery, as well as additional spaces such as the lobby and The Shop.

The exhibition originally was the Wisconsin Biennial, which began in 1978 and was organized by the Madison Art Center, MMoCA’s precursor. In 1987, the biennial became the Wisconsin Triennial. The exhibition has traditionally been organized by the Museum’s curatorial staff.

As MMoCA looks to the future by diversifying its exhibition programming and permanent collection, a guest curator will provide the opportunity to engage with new ideas and bring a fresh perspective to the Wisconsin Triennial. Adding new voices to the ongoing conversations in the contemporary art world throughout the state of Wisconsin is an exciting opportunity for the Museum, artists working in the area, and for the individual selected for this role.

For more information and instructions on how to apply, visit mmoca.org/call-for-curators. Deadline for applications is May 10, 2021.
