MMoCA’s internship program invites applications from art-enthusiastic individuals who have a high school diploma (or equivalent) and are interested in gaining first-hand professional experience in a museum setting.
Applicants are encouraged to obtain academic credit for their internship through their college or university, as applicable. Internships are paid and offer the following benefits:
- Free admission to MMoCA exhibition openings, art talks, and films
- Behind-the-scenes previews of exhibitions and special events
- Real-world museum work experience
Our project-oriented internships are available in Fall (September-December), Spring (January-May), and Summer (May-August), and are dependent upon the needs of individual departments. Scheduling is flexible, however, interns are expected to complete scheduled hours between 9 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday. Summer interns are asked to work during Art Fair on the Square.

Andrew, Administrative Intern
“My internship at MMoCA opened doors for me. As an administrative intern, I was exposed to the daily operations that make the museum tick. The small staff size allowed me to work on a range of projects, which develop a diverse set of real-world, transferable skills. Working with MMoCA’s friendly, talented staff, I always felt supported and valued. Throughout the internship, I was given a dynamic set of responsibilities, which made the experience both enjoyable and rewarding. In one day, I might move from sealing envelopes to working a museum event, or conducting research to helping prepare an exhibition. My internship with MMoCA was an invaluable experience and helped me to secure my first job.”
Emily, Development Intern
“Interning with MMoCA provided me with a well-rounded experience I couldn’t have gotten anywhere else. The staff is fun, friendly, and welcoming, but above all, they are excited about their jobs and are more than happy to take the time to talk and help you delve deeper into the museum’s workings. MMoCA has inspired me to pursue the field of art museum development and administration and I couldn’t be more pleased with my experience.”
Gabby, Events Intern
“Through my time as an Events Intern for the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, I discovered what it takes to successfully administer art-related events both in front and behind the scenes. By doing so I was able to learn valuable technical knowledge and organizational skills.”
