Knowles is one of the founding members of Fluxus—and art movement that developed in the 1960s that rebelled against the commercialism and elitism of the art world through performance of “events.” Events followed written instructions called “scores” which were enacted by the artists and often included participation of the audience—a democratic practice of making in which anyone present could participate. Shoes of Your Choice premiered April 6, 1963, at the Old Gymnasium of Douglass College in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Instructions: A member of the audience is invited to come forward to a microphone if one is available and describe a pair of shoes, the ones they are wearing or another pair. They are encouraged to tell where they got them, the size, color, why they like them, etc.
