Self-Portrait
Mark Mulhern
1996
monotype on paper
22" x 30"
This self-portrait is a monotype—a unique impression made by painting ink directly onto a printing plate which is then transferred to paper, usually via a printing press. Mulhern makes monotypes to quickly execute ideas he wants to explore in his paintings: “I love the freshness of the marks, the sense of possibility and experimentation and the momentum this medium affords.”
