Panama Hat
David Hockney
1972
etching with aquatint on paper
14 1/4" x 13 1/4"
Hockney made this portrait of his friend and curator at the Met, Henry Geldzahler, who was in the midst of a fundraiser for the Phoenix House Project—a non-profit that assists victims of drug and alcohol abuse. When Hockney heard about the cause, he sat down with an etching plate and drew this indirect portrait of his friend, only depicting his jacket, hat, pipe, and iced coffee.
