Deportación a la muerte / Deportation to Death

Leopoldo Méndez

1942

grabado en linóleo sobre papel / linocut on paper

13 3/4" x 19 1/2"

Deportation to Death is considered to be one of the earliest published depictions of the Holocaust and the death camps. Méndez, along with other TGP artists, contributed such illustrations for The Black Book of Nazi Terror in Europe (Mexico City, 1943), a groundbreaking publication documenting Nazi atrocities. It was the Taller’s most important collaboration with the European exile community in Mexico and the international antifascist movement. While illuminating the deportees’ suffering in the foreground, the seemingly endless line of boxcars conveys the magnitude of the Holocaust, and the smoke from the train’s engine references the crematoria, directly addressing the systematic genocide perpetrated by the Nazis.
