In modern and contemporary art, a painting is a work of art that is created primarily with brushes to produce designs with a variety of paints (colored liquids) on surfaces such as canvas, paper, wood, or metal. Paints are usually the product of combining color pigments (natural or synthetic in powdered form) with a carrier or medium such as:
- linseed oil to produce an oil painting
- water to produce a watercolor or gouache painting
- a plastic base to produce an acrylic painting, or
- a varnish base to produce an enamel painting
A painted surface may also be combined with other materials. Cut-up pieces of paper, for example, may be added to create a collage painting.
