MMoCA Announces Artist Roster for 2010 Wisconsin Triennial

MADISON, WI--The 2010 Wisconsin Triennial will feature works by forty-two individual artists and two pairs of artists working in collaboration. This year's Triennial--the twelfth statewide survey undertaken by the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art--will open on the evening of Friday, May 21, and be on view in the museum's lobby, State Street Gallery, New Media Gallery, and main galleries through August 15, 2010. A cornerstone of MMoCA's programming, theTriennial captures the spirit of the time and functions as a harbinger of trends to come.
The 2010 Triennial will feature site-specific installations constructed at the museum, as well as completed works transported from artists' studios. Paintings, photographs, sculpture, and video are among the mediums represented, with exhibiting artists employing a wide range of materials and diverse approaches to process and content.

Artists were selected by MMoCA's curator of education Sheri Castelnuovo, director Stephen Fleischman, and curator of exhibitions Jane Simon from a pool of more than 480 applicants. The selection process involved a review of submitted images followed by visits to selected studios across the state. The final roster of artists includes nearly equal numbers of men and women, with university professors and graduate students represented, as well as artists who were born in China (Xiaohong Zhang), Haiti (Babette Wainwright), Korea (Jason Yi), and Romania (Kitty Huffman).
Among the distinctive works that will be on view in this year's Triennial are:
Actualsize Artworks--a collaborative team comprised of Gail Simpson and Aris Georgiades--will assemble and install a large sculptural ladder and hanging light in the museum's iconic glass prow. The work, which will be visible to passersby as well as museum visitors, addresses attainment and craft, dedication and resolution.
Bruce Charlesworth will show a recent video installation titled Love Disorder. When viewers enter the homey, domestic space surrounding the video screen, they are engaged by a large projected face which enthusiastically welcomes them. As they walk further into the space, the warm welcome changes tone, eventually becoming combative and verbally abusive. Charming and confrontational, the work prompts a range of emotions.
Kitty Huffman employs video to address sexuality, spirituality, and landscape. As part of theTriennial, Huffman will present a recent self-portrait that shows the artist lying in a snowy landscape as a herd of deer approaches and then runs away. The work addresses the tenuous relationship between humans and wildlife.
Frances Myers photographed the space in Sterling Hall formerly occupied by the Physics Department. Her elegiac photographs capture abandoned tools and equipment that were once used for experimentation and education. This archaeological inquiry evokes emotions of destruction, loss, and danger.
Marc Tasman used a Polaroid camera to take at least one picture of himself every day for ten years. These images, over four-thousand in all, will be installed in the museum's main galleries. Tasman's work confronts stereotypes with humor and whimsy, and asks if self-portraiture indicates narcissism or enlightened self-reflection.
The 2010 Wisconsin Triennial will be accompanied by a full schedule of talks, both at the museum and at sites around the state. In addition, the museum will employ new technologies and time-based media to focus on the artists and works in the exhibition, as well as the artistic communities of Wisconsin. Through a major grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences, the museum will engage viewers from around and beyond the state of Wisconsin through a website incorporating images of the works on view; video and audio commentary with participating artists; and artists' videos. Hours at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art are Tuesday-Thursday (noon-5 pm); Friday (noon-8 pm); Saturday (10 am-8 pm); and Sunday (noon-5 pm). The museum is closed on Mondays.
