MMoCA mourns the loss of W. Jerome Frautschi
The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA) mourns the loss of W. Jerome Frautschi, whose visionary philanthropy created an iconic and lasting home for contemporary art in Madison.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Museum’s current home, the capstone of the $205 million development of the 200 block of State Street, funded by Frautschi.
His gift of MMoCA to the community was the focus of a recent exhibition, Iconic: 20 Years of César Pelli’s MMoCA. The exhibition celebrated the foresight of W. Jerome Frautschi and Pleasant Rowland, whose collaboration with architect César Pelli gave Madison a striking architectural monument that honors the power of art.
“The depth to which Jerry transformed Madison extends beyond the buildings on State Street,” says Paul Baker Prindle, the Gabriele Haberland Director of MMoCA. “Through his generosity, millions of individuals are inspired and enchanted by encounters with art, and millions will continue to be enriched for years to come.”
The staff, leadership, and trustees of MMoCA extend their deepest sympathies to Pleasant Rowland and the Frautschi family.
