Subway Platform, (6th Avenue, 14th Street Canarsie Line “L”, New York City)

While New York City’s underground is primarily treated as a passageway—a liminal space—Nakahashi focused attention on the often ignored aspects of the subway. Normally filled with passengers, he delighted in the quiet moments of these spaces when he was able to capture the underground’s architecture. Here, Nakahashi mirrored the central image of the subway platform to enhance the patterned effect. The artist would often venture into the subway after midnight, not emerging until the early hours of the morning—physically traversing between night and day, above and below ground—to capture these still moments.
