In their series Decay Utopia Decay, Shimon and Lindemann photographed themselves on their farm in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Their use of an ultra-large-format camera, the blurring of detail, and the vintage, Ambrotype process of the mid-nineteenth century reflects the passage of time and the fragility of human life. In confronting the endless cycle of new life, decay, and renewal on their farm, the artists also faced the inevitable decline of their own bodies, made more poignant in retrospect by Julie Lindemann’s untimely death in 2015.
