Docent Program

Docent Program

Held every two years, the docent training program provides participants with grounding in the knowledge and tools necessary to engage visitors with works of art. With training and practice, docents become adept at encouraging visitors’ responses to what they see.

The 2018 docent training course takes place from 1 to 3:30 pm on Tuesdays, September 25 through December 18, excluding November 20. The course includes an overview of major trends in modern and contemporary art; an introduction to art materials and processes; behind-the scenes discussions with museum staff; demonstrations of effective tour techniques; sessions with educators on developing age-appropriate tours; and more.

Qualifications include strong interpersonal skills, enthusiasm for art and for people, open-mindedness, flexibility, a desire to learn, and an ability to organize a series of points in a logical and engaging manner; background in art or art history is not required.

There is a $20 cost for materials; museum membership and a two-year commitment are requested of participants. In recognition of their service to the museum, docents receive benefits such as private exhibition orientations with artists and curators and a staff discount at the Museum Store.
