Awe-Inspiring, Artful Hair at the 2017 Hair Affair

Awe-Inspiring, Artful Hair at the 2017 Hair Affair

Madison’s Grandest, Most Outrageous, Most Astonishing Hair Design Show

Thursday, April 27, 2017 from 7 to 10:30 pm

MADISON, WI—Formidable hair sculptures, gravity-defying concoctions, and awe-inspiring visual delights await attendees of the 2017 Hair Affair. The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art presents the fifth biennial of this popular fundraiser, with the fantastic theme of Myths & Monsters. At center stage of this event is the runway show, with models gliding down the museum’s iconic glass stairway, and this year, models will also slither and slink through the MMoCA lobby and State Street Gallery.

Hair Affair supports the museum’s free exhibitions and education programs, while showcasing the skill and creativity of premier salons and stylists from southern Wisconsin. Inspired by the theme of Myths & Monsters, participating stylists will wow attendees on Thursday, April 27, 2017 from 7 to 10:30 pm.

Invention, imagination, and skill are key in creating these incredible coiffures. Going beyond the expected, stylists contributing to the 2017 event are drawing inspiration from cultures around the world, movies, and legends. Hair Affair is unlike other hair shows, where they demonstrate techniques for trendy hair styles and coloring, this event allows stylists to dream up the most exceptional and gigantic hair styles imaginable. Examples from past years bear witness to the stylists’ daring freedom of expression:

  • A true balancing act reaching 10 feet tall – a model adorned with two circus balls, a seal and a monkey all made of hair designed by RZ & Company.
  • A design inspired by a French ringmaster with an enormous cloud of textured blond hair and body paint that took over 8 hours to apply. Designer: Brandee Danielle Huston.
  • An alluring black hole design radiating five feet around the head of a stately model. Designer: Rejuvenation Spa.
  • A steam-punk goddess design, blending science-fiction and neo-Victorian elements. Designer: Adrian b.fix Salon.
  • The quintessence of spring, with the model’s own hair interwoven with additional fibers to represent budding branches, and butterflies made of real hair designed by William Jon Salon.

A slideshow of styles from the 2015 Hair Affair may be viewed on the museum’s website,

Hair Affair 2017 will feature 17 models representing 15 participating stylists and salons: Artisan Hair Studio; bang salon; Cha Cha Beauty & Barber; Hybrid Salon; KRS Hair and Wax Studio; Lust Beautyworks; Midwest Beauty House; Renee Knight; RZ & Company; Scottfree Salon; Studio Z Salon; Temptd Salon & Spa; Thorps Haircuts & Color; Union Hair Parlor; and William Jon Salon.
