Contemporary Photography (1970–present)

Contemporary photography is a general term referring to photography since 1970. It is an extension in technique and format of black-and-white photography that had dominated the modernist tradition. In addition to a continued interest in the black-and-white photograph, contemporary photography is distinguished by an ambitious exploration of color photography, large scale, new formats (such as staged and manipulated photography), and technical advances in the medium—most importantly, digital photography, which heralds a new age of electronic-based photography.
