The first Friday in May will offer an array of experiences at MMoCA in addition to a multitude of Gallery Night festivities at dozens of venues city-wide. The MMoCA Opening celebration for Shimon Attie: The Crossing, and for the students who curated the exhibition, will be held on Friday, May 3, 2019 from 6 to 9 pm as part of Gallery Night. The event is free.

Shimon Attie’s eight-minute video installation, The Crossing (2017), takes a poetic look at the current global refugee crisis. In an otherwise non-descript room, seven young adults sit almost motionlessly around a slowly spinning roulette table. One by one, each player mysteriously disappears until only a single person remains. Through careful choreography, Attie calls our attention to the resounding presence of absence. At the conclusion, the audience is informed that the actors are not actors at all, but Syrian refugees. As noted by the artist, The Crossing “reflects the extraordinary risks migrants are forced to take in times of crisis, literally gambling for their lives.”
