Scattered Space 5
Carroll Sockwell
1971
charcoal and graphite on paper
32" x 40"
This charcoal drawing with its thin metal frame was made to resemble a black mirror. Originally exhibited with four similar drawings, the reflective surfaces combined to create an illusion of space. Sockwell’s drawing brings to mind the many definitions of the word reflection—an image produced by a mirror or a thought formed as a result of meditation, including the contemplative nature of gazing at oneself in a mirror.
