Wisconsin Triennial 2013
September 21, 2013 through January 5, 2014
The Wisconsin Triennial represents the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art’s much anticipated and celebrated survey of current directions in Wisconsin visual art. The 2013 Triennial—the latest in an ongoing series of triennials and biennials presented by the museum since 1978—is on view in the museum’s lobby, State Street Gallery, New Media Gallery, main galleries, and rooftop sculpture garden through January 5, 2014. A cornerstone of MMoCA’s exhibition programming, the Triennial captures the richness and variety of artistic practice across the state and showcases emergent trends in the larger contemporary art world.
The jurying process involved a careful review of all submitted material, followed by visits to a select number of artist studios across the state. The curatorial team, consisting of curator Richard Axsom, curator of education Sheri Castelnuovo, director Stephen Fleischman, and associate curator Leah Kolb, considered the work of more than 530 artists. Traveling across the state—from Beloit to Door County and from Kenosha to Hudson—the curators conducted studio visits with 113 artists. Ultimately, thirty-five individual artists and five collaborative pairs were selected for inclusion in the exhibition. The 2013 Wisconsin Triennial serves as a platform to engender and celebrate artistic invention in the state, and stands as a testament to the dedication and sophistication of the artists working throughout Wisconsin.
