First Fridays Celebrates “Return to Function”

First Fridays at MMoCA
Celebrates “Return to Function”
Friday, May 1  ·  5:30–9 pm
MADISON, WI – First Fridays at MMoCA will celebrate the opening of a new exhibition, Return to Function, on Friday, May 1, 2009, from 5:30 to 9 pm. On view in the main galleries of the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, Return to Function brings together contemporary artists who make functional objects that are simultaneously useful and subversive.
In keeping with the theme of the exhibition, two live performances will explore the use of objects that make music and other interesting sounds, as well as distinctive visual impressions.

Active Percussion Duo  ·  6 pm
The Active Percussion Duo entertains audiences with a percussive blend of improvisation, noise, def beats, clatter, freneticism, stilted banter, and fun. The duo employs found objects in their performances, including kitchen utensils, bicycle parts, hunks of jagged metal, and more. Members of the Active Percussion Duo are Michael Brenneis and Geoffrey Brady, both committed percussionists and local musicians.
LoVid  ·  7 pm
The New York–based performance duo LoVid creates works with live video installations, sculptures, digital prints, patchworks, media projects, performances, and video recordings. Artists Tali Hinkis and Kyle Lapidus combine opposing elements, contrasting hard electronics to soft patchworks, handmade to machine-produced objects, and analog to digital media. This multidirectional approach is reflected in the content of their work, simultaneously romantic and aggressive, wireless and wire-full.
The May 1 edition of First Fridays at MMoCA will also celebrate Gallery Night with refreshing cocktails and a crowd of arts enthusiasts from across the city. Guests can take advantage of a 10 percent discount on purchases in the Museum Store (with certain exclusions); MMoCA member discounts also apply.
Admission is free and open to the public.

First Fridays at MMoCA is sponsored by Newcomb Construction Company and J.P. Cullen & Sons, Inc.; media support for First Fridays is provided by Isthmus|
