Poems for the Wicked
Poems for the Wicked
An Evening of Original Poetry
March 6, 2009 · 6:30-8 pm
MADISON, WI – A poetry reading titled “Poems for the Wicked” will take place Friday, March 6, at 6:30 pm in the main galleries of the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA). This special evening will feature original poems by 21 members of the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets. Each poem delves into themes depicted in MMoCA's exhibition Something Wicked This Way Comes. Admission to the exhibition and reading is free. An informal reception will follow the 90-minute reading.
“Poems for the Wicked” is organized by MMoCA's education department with special assistance from Gillian Nevers. A docent at MMoCA, Nevers is membership coordinator for the Wisconsin Fellowship and a published author. Along with two other poets, Nevers won the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters 2008 Statewide Poetry Contest for her poem “Playing for Keeps.”
The exhibition title, Something Wicked This Way Comes, is a warning uttered by one of the three witches in Shakespeare's Macbeth. The line sets the stage for MMoCA's exploration of evil as represented in the museum's collection of approximately 5,000 artworks. Dark themes cut through styles and movements represented within the collection, as evidenced by the unusual gathering of artists in the exhibition; these include Leonard Baskin, Leon Golub, Käthe Kollwitz, Robert Lostutter, Claes Oldenberg, T.L. Solien, William Wiley, and Andy Warhol, among others.
More information about the exhibition is available here.
Admission to exhibitions at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art is free of charge. MMoCA is an independent museum supported through memberships and through generous contributions and grants from individuals, corporations, agencies, and foundations. Important support is also generated through auxiliary group programs; special events; rental of the museum's lobby, lecture hall, and rooftop garden; and sales through the Museum Store.
