THE COMMONPLACE

Modern and contemporary artists continue to hold a high regard for the traditional subject category of still life. Still-life painting found its first major expression in the Dutch Republic of the seventeenth century. Still-life paintings typically presented objects arranged on a tabletop, most especially beautiful bouquets of flowers.

Modern and contemporary artists have expanded the range of still life to include commonplace objects in new settings, including those drawn from industrial and popular cultures.
