California Context
August 4, 2007 to September 23, 2007

On view in MMoCA’s main galleries, California Context brings together selected works by California artists in the museum’s permanent collection and provides an idea of the artistic energy that surrounded Jess’s life and work on view in Jess: To and From the Printed Page. Although Jess was an influential artistic figure throughout the latter half of the twentieth century, he often deliberately worked against dominant artistic trends. California Context shows the range of styles and approaches to art making—some similar to Jess’s, others very different—that prevailed at that time in the expansive and populous state of California.

California Context includes some of the most important American artists of Jess’s time, as well as emerging artists working in the state today, including works by:

Robert Bechtle
Larry Bell

Bruce Conner
John Coplans
Richard Diebenkorn
