Kids' Art Adventures

Kids' Art Adventures invites families to make art together inspired by MMoCA's current exhibitions. Activities are planned for 6- to 10-year olds, but younger siblings are welcome. Children must be accompanied by a parent or other adult. Program participants should plan to meet promptly at 1 pm in MMoCA's main lobby.

2012 spring SCHEDULE

Sunday, February 12 ∙ 1–2:30 pm
Magician Lou Lepore will delight children and adults alike with his unique blend of comedy and magic. Lou Lepore has been practicing magic for over thirty years and has performed at fairs, festivals, libraries, schools, birthday parties, company picnics, and corporate events throughout Wisconsin. Afterward, participants will create a mystery box inspired by Houdini’s Metamorphosis Trunk. What will be inside your box?

Sunday, March 11 ∙ 1–2:30 pm
Explore works of art in ¡Tierra y Libertad! and create modeling clay stamps for making prints inspired by the stunning patterns and colors of traditional Mexican arts.

Sunday, April 15 ∙ 1–2:30 pm
Ace Willie (William Litzler) will perform interactive magic routines for children, plus some of Houdini's favorite magic tricks. He will be using some vintage magic props as part of the program. Ace Wille is a Beloit Wisconsin native who has been performing for over forty years, and was one of the feature performers at Madison's first comedy club, The Comedy Cellar, in the early 1980s. Following the magic program, kids will discuss Joe Coleman’s The Man Who Walked Through Walls (Harry Houdini) and then create their own vivid portrait telling their story or the story of someone they admire. Portraits will be completed with a tooled metal frame.

Sunday, May 6 ∙ 1–2:30 pm
Make paper sculptures inspired by birds—living and illustrated—in Houdini: Art and Magic. Kids will meet and learn about the guest homing pigeons that live on the Madison Children’s Museum’s Rooftop Ramble. If weather permits, participants will watch the birds fly back to the Children’s Museum. Pre-registration is required for this workshop by emailing sheri@mmoca.org. Registration deadline is April 26.
