Many of us are collectors. Whether it is antique furniture, comic books, wind-up toys, or works of art, there is a thrill in searching for and acquiring objects we desire. Research, foresight, and sometimes a little luck are required to assemble a cohesive and dynamic body of works. Collecting is an important element of how art museums uphold their responsibility to preserve and interpret artwork for present and future generations. As such, these institutions strive continuously to attain objects that strengthen their collections and coincide with their missions.

In building its collection, a museum purchases objects as well as receiving gifts of artwork from generous patrons. In an effort to support local, regional, and national artists exhibited at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, MMoCA regularly acquires selections from exhibitions it has organized.
