Bringing Creative Expression to Children Across Madison and Dane County

MADISON, WI—For four decades, Art Cart has provided free hands-on art experiences to thousands of children in Madison. Expanded in 1998 to include Dane County residents, Art Cart and Art Cart EXTRA! now travel to more than 100 outdoor locations in 13 communities. With expert instruction and a relaxed approach, the program offers children and families a variety of opportunities for creative expression at area parks, playgrounds, and beaches.

“Our goal at MMoCA is to connect people of all ages with modern and contemporary art and many of the Art Cart activities take their inspiration from MMoCA’s exhibitions,” said Sheri Castelnuovo, curator of education at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA). “Engaging children with visual art and creative processes is important to their development. It is rewarding to see what they discover and how much they enjoy it.”

Art Cart EXTRA! takes place every Saturday from June 20 to August 1, excluding July 4. It will travel to the area communities of Black Earth, Cambridge, Cottage Grove, DeForest, Fitchburg, McFarland, Monona, Oregon, Stoughton, Sun Prairie, Verona, and Waunakee. It will also visit Prairie du Sac from 1-3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16. Art Cart EXTRA! is a program of MMoCA.

Art Cart occurs weekdays from June 18 through August 13. Art Cart is a partnership of MMoCA and Madison School & Community Recreation.

Both programs offer projects for children ages three and above. A schedule and map are available online at mmoca.org; under Programs and Events/Children’s Programs. Participation in Art Cart and Art Cart EXTRA! is free. All children should be accompanied by an adult. Families may participate without pre-registration; however, organized summer camps and other childcare programs must pre-register by calling 608.204.3021.

This year, in addition to regular programming, MMoCA and MSCR will also be hosting a 40th Anniversary Celebration on Tuesday, July 28 at Rennebohm Park. Further details still to come, information will be available on the MMoCA website.

Art Cart and Art Cart EXTRA! are generously supported by the Great Dane Pub & Brewing Company, American Family Insurance, The Cummings Christensen Family Foundation, Culver’s VIP Foundation, Madison South Rotary Foundation, and Roman Candle.
