A Striking New Art Cart Hits the Road for Summer Fun

A Striking New Art Cart Hits the Road for Summer Fun

MADISON, WI--For more than 35 years, kids and parents at Madison-area parks, playgrounds, and beaches have gathered at the Art Cart, the community’s roving art van. With a join-in-the-fun spirit, the van has carried art supplies and trained art educators to thousands of children each summer. This year, however, there’s a twist. Just in time for the 2011 season, the Art Cart has had a serious facelift.

With the program’s familiar dark blue van showing its age, the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA) sought more reliable transportation for the program it offers in collaboration with Madison School and Community Recreation (MSCR). Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, a white 2011 Mercedes Sprinter van will be making the rounds beginning in June. The van will be easy to spot: it’s decorated with artwork by Brian Young, a third grader at Muir Elementary School in Madison. Brian’s painting, which shows two monkeys, was on view at MMoCA earlier this year as part of the museum’s Young at Art exhibition.

Families can watch for the van beginning June 16 at sites throughout the city of Madison. The Art Cart program continues through August 18, with nearly 90 stops scheduled, including evening programs at many locations. Art Cart is a joint program of MMoCA and MSCR.

Beginning June 18 and continuing through July 30, Art Cart EXTRA! will travel on Saturdays to the area communities of Black Earth, Cottage Grove, DeForest, Fitchburg, McFarland, Monona, Mount Horeb, Stoughton, Sun Prairie, Verona, and Waunakee. Art Cart EXTRA! is a project of MMoCA.

Participation in Art Cart and Art CART EXTRA! is free. Both programs offer individual and group art projects for children ages three and above. All children should be accompanied by an adult. Organized summer camps and other childcare programs must pre-register by calling MMoCA at 608.257.0158 to ensure adequate supplies. Families are invited to drop-in with no pre-registration necessary.

A full schedule for Art Cart and Art Cart EXTRA! can be found on the museum’s website, mmoca.org. From the home page, click Programs and Events/Children’s Programs.

Art Cart and Art Cart EXTRA! are generously supported by the Alliant Energy Foundation, the Great Dane Pub & Brewing Company, the Cummings Christensen Family Foundation, Terry Haller, and Culver’s Frozen Custard and ButterBurgers.
