Surveys Vibrant Madison Arts Scene

MADISON, WI – Madison’s semiannual celebration of the visual arts, Gallery Night, will be held on Friday, May 6, 2011, from 5 to 9 pm. Sixty-two venues will participate in this spring’s event. Art lovers can look forward to an evening packed with free exhibition openings, special events, demonstrations, refreshments, and live performances.

Spring Gallery Night venues include museums, galleries, coffee shops, and other businesses across the city. Highlights include:

  • Opening receptions for Charles Munch and Randall Berndt at Grace Chosey Gallery; for printmakers Art Werger and Karla Hackenmiller at Fanny Garver Gallery; and for fiber artists Lee Kleeman, Darlene Coltrain, and Deb Menz at Bindley Collection Gallery.
  • The debut of the Hatch Art House on the corner of Baldwin and Williamson Streets, a gallery showcasing work of thirty local artists with an emphasis on repurposing, upcycling, and recycling. 
  • Works from undergraduate and graduate students studying with Tom Jones at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, on view at Steenbock Gallery of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters.
  • New prints at Tandem Press by Suzanne Caporael, Judy Pfaff, Sam Gilliam, Robert Cottingham, Joan Snyder, Benjamin Edwards, and Richard Bosman. 
  • Pottery demonstrations at Fine Earth Gallery & Studio and glassblowing at Radiant Glass and Studio Paran.
  • Instruments as art at Early Gallery, with a performance by honky tonk musicians Kristy Larson, Mark Roeder, and Todd Cambrio. 
  • Artists spanning the generations, from K-12 students in Young at Art at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art to older adults featured at the opening of An Artful Affair at Madison Senior Center.

The printed guide to Gallery Night, with details about offerings and locations, may be picked up free of charge at participating establishments. A map and list of Gallery Night participants will also be available in the May 6 edition of Isthmus.
