FAUX ART HEIST AT MMoCA!

FAUX ART HEIST AT MMoCA!
Conceptual Theft Hits the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art

MADISON, WI--Art lovers and amateur private eyes are invited to put their detective skills to the test on October 8, 2009, during an evening of mystery and intrigue in support of the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art. Edition MMoCA Presents: A Contemporary Caper challenges guests to find a “missing” print by Madison-based artist TL Solien. The event, which takes take place at the museum starting at 7 pm, is a project of Edition MMoCA, an auxiliary group that raises funds to support the museum's permanent collection.

A Contemporary Caper will begin at a faux gallery opening featuring the unveiling of Solien's highly anticipated new work. As the curtain is lifted to reveal the print, a gasp is heard from the crowd . . . the masterpiece is missing! Charged with solving the whodunit, guests will stroll through the museum, encountering a cast of inscrutable characters who disclose clues. Guests who correctly solve the mystery will be entered in a raffle to win TL Solien's print, created for this special evening and framed by the museum.

In addition to original art, mystery, and intrigue, A Contemporary Caper will also feature “mystery martinis” and hors d'oeuvres from Fresco, the museum's rooftop restaurant, DJ tunes, and a unique Black Box Auction. Guests can choose from a variety of small black boxes at the $25, $50, or $100 level; the surprise contents, ranging from gift certificates to favorite restaurants and tickets to sporting events to contemporary merchandise, will be a steal at the ticket price.

TL Solien, who has lived in Madison since 1998 and is a professor in the Art Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is admired nationally for prints and paintings that explore personal experience. His artworks are in numerous private and public collections, including the Tate Gallery in London, the Whitney Museum in New York, and The Art Institute of Chicago, as well as the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art. The exhibition TL Solien: Myths & Monsterswas featured in MMoCA's main galleries during the summer of 2008.

A Contemporary Caper promises not to be a run-of-the-mill fundraiser, according to Anna Trull, president of Edition MMoCA. “Our goal was to create an exciting evening and a fabulous party to benefit the museum's permanent collection,” Trull said. “The museum's beautiful spaces have been an inspiration as we've planned the event, and we know people will enjoy the artwork, drama, music, and refreshments.”

The cost of attending the event is $50 per person and reservations are required. Patron tickets, which include the TL Solien print (unframed) created especially for A Contemporary Caper, can be purchased for $150 and are reserved for the first 50 patron reservations.

Edition MMoCA members learn about art collecting and contemporary art while meeting new people at a variety of unique events throughout the year. Like other Edition MMoCA fundraisers, A Contemporary Caper will directly benefit the permanent collection of the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art.
