Hair Affair: a Fundraiser for MMoCA

Hair Affair: a Fundraiser for MMoCA
What Happens When High Art Meets a Pair of Scissors and a Can of Hair Spray?
April 16, 2009

MADISON, WI—The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, which offers free exhibitions and education programs to more than 150,000 visitors each year, will be the site and beneficiary of a new fundraiser: Hair Affair: The Art of Hair. The event, organized by the Art League, will take place at the museum (227 State Street) on Thursday, April 16, 2009, from 7 to 10 pm. The evening will showcase fantastical hair designs on live models against a backdrop of delectable hors d'oeuvres, musical performance, and the stunning setting of the museum's lobby.

Tickets to the event cost $65 each and may be purchased online at www.mmoca.org (click on Events/Hair Affair) or by calling the museum at 608.257.0158.

Sculptural hair designs by premier salons and stylists from the Madison area will take center-stage at Hair Affair as models descend the museum's stunning glass staircase. Commentary will be provided by guest emcees Leigh Mills and Carleen Wild, both news anchors at Madison television station NBC15. According to Art League board member and event co-chair Theodora Zehner, guests can expect to see remarkable variety in the hairstyles on view. “Participating stylists have provided preview sketches and descriptions, each more intriguing than the next. The styles incorporate aspects of cultural and historical hair treatments, as well as elements of contemporary art. Stylists are treating this evening as an opportunity to be unrestrained and flamboyant, and the results will be memorable.”

The evening will also feature a live performance by the Ahn Trio. These sisters are classical musicians who play cello, piano, and violin in a style the Seattle Times calls “intimate, yet grand, innovative, yet classic.” A silent auction will offer guests spa and pampering-inspired packages such as an overnight stay at the Sundara Inn and Spa. The evening will also feature music from DJ Nick Nice; hors d'oeuvres from Fresco, the museum's rooftop restaurant; and a cash bar featuring a signature cocktail.

Hair Affair is organized by the Art League of the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art in support of the museum's free, world-class exhibitions, as well as its lectures and gallery talks, films, tours, and extensive programming for children across Dane County.

Hair Affair participating salons include: Aniu Salon Spa Yoga; B.fix Salon; Cha Cha Beauty & Barber; Cinema Hair Studio; Deonne Salon & Day Spa; Elements; Hair; Hybrid Salon; Millenium Salon & Spa; Rejuvenation Spa; RZ & Company; The Ultimate Spa Salon; and William Jon Salon.

Generous support for Hair Affair is provided by Think Ink and Design; Brava Magazine; Converd; Great Big Color; and the Dean Aesthetic Surgery Center.
