Jazz, Art, and The Beautiful Lie

Jazz, Art, and The Beautiful Lie
First Fridays at MMoCA
December 7, 2007  •  5:30-8 pm

MADISON, WI -- The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art will present a special First Fridays at MMoCA on December 7, 2007. Jazz musicians Ben Sidran (keyboard and vocals) and Nick Moran (bass) will perform in the museum's glass-enclosed lobby, while artist Stephen Hilyard presents an illustrated talk about his exhibition The Beautiful Lie, on view in the adjoining State Street Gallery.

The Beautiful Lie, which opens at MMoCA on December 1, uses videos and photographs to explore the power and reliability of the image in contemporary culture. An associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Hilyard asks the viewer to reflect on simulation as a metaphor for reality. Stephen Hilyard's talk will begin at 6:30 pm in the museum's lecture hall.

The museum is pleased to welcome jazz legend Ben Sidran and bassist Nick Moran to First Fridays at MMoCA. Often called a true American art form, jazz, too, employs metaphor to comment on reality. Sidran and Moran will play from 5:30 to 8 pm.

Also on view at MMoCA on December 7 will be Karl Wirsum: Winsome Works(some) and Hairy Who (and some others) in the main galleries; Making Visible the Invisible in the Henry Street Gallery; and Individual Experience: The Photographs of Ida Wyman in the Works-on-Paper Study Center.

Families attending First Fridays can drop by the museum's education workshop between 6 and 8 pm to make puppets and masks inspired by the artworks of Karl Wirsum.

Those seeking shelter from cold winter winds can enjoy hot chocolate drinks from Fresco, as well as snacks and other cocktails, served in the museum lobby.

Admission to First Fridays at MMoCA is free for MMoCA members and anyone dressed as someone they're not | $5 admission for all others.
